About Project Second Chance
Since the Program began in 1984, it has trained over 3800 tutors, who have contributed over 498,000 hours to help more than 6200 adults in our community with the basic literacy skills. Project Second Chance has offices throughout Contra Costa County where prospective learners can meet with staff to learn more about the program. Tutors and learners meet at libraries, coffee shops and other public places; while many tutors and learners elect to do remote, virtual tutoring from the comfort of their homes.
Project Second Chance helps learners become functional in today’s increasingly complex world. Just think how frightening and limiting it would be if you couldn’t read the instructions on your medication, or read your bills and contracts, or read a book to your child, or vote, or advance at work.
It is likely that you know someone with poor reading or writing skills, but many adults who struggle in this area may be ashamed to admit it. Project Second Chance can help! And if you or someone you know is interested in becoming a tutor, get more information on the Prospective Tutor Orientation page.
Once learners begin to realize they CAN learn to read, they begin making better decisions for themselves, their families, and their community. As one learner, Martha, said, “When you no longer walk with the crows but fly with the eagles, all things are possible!”
Thank you for any assistance you can give!
